Idiocy

Here's a quote from Jim Hendry, General Manager of the Chicago Cubs, regarding his team's putrid offense last year:

"Well we'd like to get guys who can get on base, but our trouble was knocking guys in. We finished 4th or 5th in the league in hitting so we did manage to get guys on base. You can get all the guys on base that you want, but you have to knock them in."

Yes, Jim, you finished 5th in the league in batting average. You also finished last in on-base percentage, which means, actually, every team in the league was better than you in getting guys on base. Nevermind the relative importance of "getting guys on base" to "knocking them in," which you seem to understate.

I find it hard to believe than someone in charge of a baseball team -- an enterprise worth millions of dollars -- can make this sort of comment in public.

Also, the Red Sox should get on the phone and offer up, uh, someone we have who doesn't get on base. Wily Mo maybe? He can knock guys in, and he'd only add 40 or so walks to the team total - which would still leave them last in the league (going by last year's numbers).
